Profile
It would be hard to argue that there is a more electric arm among baseball prospects than Cole's. The right-hander's fastball is generally in the mid-to-upper 90's and has been clocked as fast as 99 mph. He gets a ton of strength from his legs, as evidenced in the video below. His slider is thrown with good velocity but still needs to develop more bite, while his changeup represents a good dip in speed but has been called too firm by scouts. Cole decided to play college ball as UCLA after the Yankees drafted him in the first round of the 2008 draft, and he no doubt will go much higher this time around. A 2008 MLB.com draft report likened his style of pitching to Kyle Farnsworth, but many feel his career will be much better than that of the journeyman reliever. His size and mechanics will always raise a small bit of concern, but with a power arm and good mound presence, he will simply need a little fine-tuning to live up to his billing.
