Profile
Like Cole, Purke was a former first-round pick (by Texas in 2009) but elected not to sign. Purke can throw in the mid-90′s seemingly without much effort, but his mechanics worry some scouts. His arm often has trouble catching up to his body when he delivers his pitches, and as Keith Law points out, a changeup will be difficult for him to master because of his “vulcan” style delivery. Nonetheless, a good athlete and potential front-line starter is a fair description of TCU’s Purke. He has an effective slurve but may need to turn it into either a sharp-breaking slider or big-hook curve to help keep hitters honest.
