Winning a championship? Just a thing that happens

Posted by Michael Seff on Thursday, May 3, 2012,

I love reading articles on teams well before a season begins, talking about whether they have done enough to finally get to the Super Bowl or the World Series or what have you.

Pundits and those alike talk about a team having the talent to win a title. They question whether the pieces of the puzzle are in place, whether the drive is there, whether they can finally beat that hated rival that has kept them from glory so many times.

But then comes the element(s) that no one can predict. In a n...

Musings on Baseball: Rain aids Yanks/Sox, Cards still get no love

Rainout May Aid Yankees and Red Sox

After two emotionally draining games – more specifically, Saturday's epic comeback by the Yankees and epic meltdown by the Red Sox – Sunday's rainout may have been the best possible result for both teams.

For the Yankees, it allows them to push back CC Sabathia to start the opener of a key three-game series in Texas, for which the Rangers will be without the services of Adrian Beltre. The rain has been nothing but bad news for Texas lately.

Commish Outdoes Himself: Payton's Suspension Excessive; Where Was Belichick's?

Posted by Michael Seff on Thursday, March 22, 2012,

At least today is a day where I do not feel alone.

I am joined now by tens, even hundreds of thousands of loyal Saints fans in my abhorrence of Roger Goodell. He has inflicted a black mark almost as thick as “Bountygate” has on the Saints franchise and the city of New Orleans.

Head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for one year, while defensive coordinator Gregg Williams – now in the same post with the St. Louis Ram...

Six Things I Miss About the Paul Tagliabue-run NFL

Posted by Michael Seff on Wednesday, March 14, 2012,
If you’ve read enough on here throughout the years, you know Roger Goodell is one of my least-favorite people on the planet. Paul Tagliabue is a saint, if only by comparison. Ever since Goodell’s reign of terror began in 2006, a number of things I cherished about the NFL have vanished, seemingly for good. Here are six of them:

WHEN FANS COULD SEE THE SUPER BOWLS THEY PURCHASED TICKETS FOR

If Roger Goodell were virtually anybody else in this world (short of, say, Barack Obam...

New York Giants: The St. Louis Cardinals of football

Posted by Michael Seff on Monday, February 6, 2012,

I saw a Facebook post yesterday that had a picture of Eli Manning paying homage to the well-known Dos Equis ad for The Most Interesting Man in the World.

As the commercial's star says “I don't always drink beer, but when I do I prefer Dos Equis,” this photo said “I don't always get to the Super Bowl, but when I do, I beat the Patriots.”

Clever, indeed. And fitting, both for the New York Giants and their new baseball counterparts, the St. Louis Cardinals.

Last year's baseball darlin...

Super Bowl XLVI: History Repeats Itself

Posted by Michael Seff on Tuesday, January 31, 2012,

Line: Patriots by 2½

This isn’t a movie I wanted to watch again, but it’s the Super Bowl, so we give it our due diligence as American citizens. The Patriots and Giants at least figure to put on a heck of a show, just as they did four years ago in Glendale. Rather evenly matched, there are advantages and disadvantages for both clubs. A further look:

Quarterbacks – Tom Brady vs. Eli Manning

Writing has been on the wall all year for Patriots; destiny begs in Indy

Posted by Michael Seff on Monday, January 30, 2012,

Even from the moment you realized the Super Bowl was being played in Indianapolis, you had to know that the Patriots would be in the mix.

Then, the lockout happened, giving an edge to all of last year’s top teams (New England had the NFL’s best mark at 14-2).

But then came Week 1, and Patriot fans could have booked their trips to Indianapolis. When the Dolphins predictably, and fruitlessly, ran a fade pattern on 4th-and-...

Stunning similarities between 2007, 2011 Giants

Posted by Michael Seff on Wednesday, January 25, 2012,

If it feels like you are watching NFL reruns this January, you are not alone.

The Patriots and Giants are meeting in the Super Bowl (stop me if you’ve heard this one before), a week after both utilized epic goat-like performances by the Ravens and 49ers, respectively, to set up a rematch of Super Bowl XLII.

Minus the 19-0 subplot of 2007, New England returns to this showdown as a No. 1 seed while the Giants come in as a N...

Bug Selig briefs on baseball at WCBF

Posted by Michael Seff on Sunday, January 22, 2012,
I was fortunate enough to get a couple minutes in a mini-scrum -- actually, just me and an LA Times writer -- with Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig at the World Children's Baseball Fair awards luncheon at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. Selig touched on the potential purchase of the Dodgers and the Angels' Hot Stove moves this offseason:

(On Frank McCourt buying the team in 2004)

Championship Game picks; A Harbaugh Bowl looming?

Posted by Michael Seff on Friday, January 20, 2012,

We’ve reached the Final Four and perhaps more refreshingly, two of the league’s three offensive sideshows have been put to rest. The Saints and Packers and their circus-like attack will be home watching three teams at least built in large part on defense, while the one dragon left to slay resides in Foxborough. The Ravens and Giants are built to win on the road, but in championship weekend history, only twice have both road teams won  (1992 and 1997). Still, from 1997-2005 at least one...

Did 49ers' turnaround actually start at the end of last season?

Posted by Michael Seff on Tuesday, January 17, 2012,

For all those marveling in the transformation of the San Francisco 49ers this season under Jim Harbaugh, there is a very real possibility that evidence of such surfaced at the end of last season.

After a dismal 5-10 record in 15 games under Mike Singletary, the 49ers not only played hard in their season-finale for interim coach Jim Tomsula, they were downright dominant, trouncing the Cardinals 38-7. An impotent offense that had averaged 17.8 points...

Posted by Michael Seff on Tuesday, January 17, 2012,

When you have made it this far in the season, you are less concerned with homefield advantage and more concerned with momentum and capitalizing on the opportunity at hand.

As we approach Championship Sunday in the 2011 NFL season, the Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants face tall orders in going on the road to try and earn a trip to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis.

City of Indianapolis has ties to NFL's final four teams

Posted by Michael Seff on Monday, January 16, 2012,
The city of Indianapolis is no stranger to the Final Four. They have hosted the prestigious NCAA basketball event six times, most recently in 2010. But this year's NFL Final Four represents a plethora of storylines for teams hoping to vie for Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium.

First, there are the New England Patriots. Perhaps the Colts' biggest rival, nothing would incense the locals more than a city overrun with Chowder-heads rubbing it in that their beloved Pats are vying for their fourt...

And then there were 8: Divisional Round game picks

Posted by Michael Seff on Thursday, January 12, 2012,

Chris Berman calls this the best weekend in all of sports, the divisional round of the playoffs. The big four are coming off their byes, a week after all four home teams won in the wild card round for just the third time in 22 years since the NFL went to a 12-team playoff format. However, all four teams have not won in the divisional round since 2004. However you slice it, there figures to be a surprise or two this weekend and some exceptional football. How the West was lost

Posted by Michael Seff on Tuesday, January 3, 2012,

Coming into this year, I had a theory: the right teams will always be there come playoff time. No matter what, the team that has a chance to do damage in the playoffs will find a way to get in, and the pretenders will shoot themselves in the foot.

I no longer have that theory.

NFC East, AFC West up for grabs in season's final week

Hard to believe a season that almost never was is almost over. While most of the playoff spots have been locked up there is still some drama remaining, including the NFC East showdown between Dallas and the Giants and the final AFC wild card spot. 16 divisional games are on the docket, which certainly isn't a foolproof solution to fixing some of these so-called meaningless games, but nevertheless we are in for another fun finish.

Analysis: Thankfully, we are out of force-fed Thursday Night Football games by Roger Goodell after this one. The Texans suffered a major setback last week against Carolina, but still have hopes of getting a first-round bye. The Colts are ecstatic after breaking through for their first win and are looking to repeat the wonderful finish of the 1986 club, which similarly started 0-13 yet ended with three consecutive wins. Analysis: For every Tim Tebow, there is a Matt Ryan. Quiety the fourth-year QB has the Falcons in the playoff chase yet again, and with the lowly Jags making a short flight into town now would be the time to solidify their standing in the crowded NFC playoff field. Atlanta has yet to really clobber an opponent at home, yet this spread has jumped from 11 to 11.5 to 13.5.             When it’s all said and done for the 2011 season, as many as nine coaches could be out of a job. A number of those coaches have tasted success as recently as last season.

Jack Del Rio was the first to get the axe, losing his job after nearly nine seasons in Jacksonville when he was dismissed November 28. A year ago, Del Rio had the Jags in contention at 8-5 before they fizzled and lost their last three games.

Packers' chase for perfection, NFC East showdown highlight Week 14: Game picks

Thursday's pick: Steelers begin holiday feast

Posted by Michael Seff on Wednesday, December 7, 2011,
Cleveland at Pittsburgh (-14)
Analysis: Not sure if it's fair to call the schedule-makers biased, but giving the Steelers two games against the Browns in December seems more than generous. As it stands, the Browns are generally pretty generous to their opponents because they have no offense whatsoever and a mediocre defense. Pittsburgh is rolling despite being last year's Super Bowl loser, usually a bad omen. At 9-3 and with only one NFL-caliber team remaining on its schedule (at 49ers next Mo...

Bold prediction? Colts won't go 0-16

Posted by Michael Seff on Tuesday, December 6, 2011,

When I think about the 2008 Detroit Lions, the league’s only 0-16 team to this point, I still don’t consider them to be a comically bad bunch. They were a bad football team, make no mistake about it, but this was not the comedy-of-errors group like the 1976 Buccaneers that made us laugh (mostly at John McKay’s dry wit), cry, and wonder if we were witnessing history.

That Lions team gave up 522 points, so needless to say the defense might ...

Reunion Tours Put on Hold

One of the neat things about player movement in the NFL is when they involve quarterbacks returning to face their former teams. Sometimes, those chess-matches turn into classics.

A couple years ago, Brett Favre, donning Vikings purple, faced the Packers for the first time in his career on a Monday night, a shootout the Vikings won, 30-23. Later that year he made his return to Lambeau Field and completed the sweep ...

Full Week 13 picks

Posted by Michael Seff on Thursday, December 1, 2011,

I’m limping towards the finish line at 10 under, so it’s time for a big breakthrough week. 8-3 is the magic number in the AFC, as four teams in three divisions share that mark. And then there are the 11-0 Packers and their chase for perfection. Will the Giants, as they did to the Broncos in 98, spoil the dream? And, like the old days of 2007, the Patriots are favored by 20 points. Needless to say the Colts-Patriots rivalry has lost its luster without Peyton Manning. Now, the picks:

Thursday Night Football - Eagles at Seahawks

Posted by Michael Seff on Thursday, December 1, 2011,
Philadelphia (-3) at Seattle
Analysis: Maybe flying all the way to Seattle on a short week is just what the underachieving Eagles need. They were annihilated by the Patriots last week to officially kill the "Dream Team's" playoff hopes. The Seahawks lost to the Redskins to also finish any faint hopes they may have had at a wild card run. Needless to say, 7-9 won't win them the NFC West this year. Vince Young gets the call again for Philly, which means the Seahawks can expect at least one gift ...

It's almost gotten to the point where I'm "playing out the string", to drudge up the dreading saying. 10 games under means I need almost every week to be a stellar one the rest of the way. That starts with a Thanksgiving weekend full of monster games, perhaps none bigger than Packers-Lions to open the Turkey Day slate. Safety first

The Rams did something historic in an otherwise-ugly third quarter in Arizona. With their only two scores being safeties, they became the first team to ever score exactly four points in a single quarter. They also became the first team since the 1999 Jaguars to record safeties on consecutive defensive plays. Perhaps not surprisingly, the two quarterbacks in these instances are Kordell Stewart and John Skelton.

Double whammy

Yikes. 5-11 a week ago, it's time I get this thing turned around. But until I do, feel free to look at my picks and for betting purposes, pick the opposite. Breaking down the games for Week 3

I wasn't exactly on point last week, going 5-9-2, although the late games brought me back a bit (thanks for showboating, Jesse Holley). The aerial assaults and scoring barrages continue, a trend that looks like it's here to stay. Week 3 features several perennial also-rans playing in big games looking to show they are for real (see: Detroit, Buffalo, Houston). 2-0 is great for those teams, but stepping up to a real challenge is what truly makes believers. And now, a breakdown of the games:

Breaking down the Week 2 slate

Posted by Michael Seff on Friday, September 16, 2011,

To say the offenses were ahead of the defenses in Week 1 is a vast understatement. Five different games featured two quarterbacks going over 300 yards, most unforgettably Cam Newton's stellar 418-yard debut and Tom Brady's 517-yard demolition of the Dolphins on Monday night. So will it be more of the same in Week 2? In Newton's case, a repeat performance will be awfully tough against the defending champion Packers. Brady will also face a stiff test in San Diego. But smart money says continue ...

It's been a horrible year for umpires, especially in Atlanta. But at Turner Field Friday night, Tim Timmons made reprimands for many of his colleagues with a saving effort.

And finally, ESPN polished off "The Weekend Part 2" by showcasing its two local favorites and, quite frankly, the only two teams that exist in professional baseball (they'll recognize the Phillies come October, however). The Red Sox and Yankees split the first two games of their fourth series of 2011 before ESPN (for the record, this is the official ESPN equation: NESN + YES = ESPN) got to air the rubber match.

With the Yankees lead...

100-loss Astros provide joy to city of Brotherly Love

Posted by Michael Seff on Saturday, July 30, 2011,
20 years ago, the Houston Astros ripped off the Baltimore Orioles for one of the greatest (or worst, depending on your perspective) trades in Major League history when they dealt aging first baseman Glenn Davis for future stars Curt Schilling, Pete Harnisch, and Steve Finley.

Today, they evened out karma when they once again allowed the future National League champs to rip them off by dealing face-of-the-franchise Hunter Pence to the Philadelphia Phillies for three single-A players and, even b...

Why the parity in the NFC only?

Posted by Michael Seff on Thursday, July 14, 2011,

If there is to be a 2011 NFL season, one trend people will keep an eye on is the disparity of parity between the AFC and NFC.

In an unprecedented run of unpredictability, the NFC has sent 10 different representatives to the Super Bowl in as many seasons. On the other hand, the AFC has seen the same three teams turn the trick the past eight years.

Many feel that there is a budding dynasty in Titletown, where the Packers appear poised to establish dominance in the conference just as they did ...

Brandon Phillips: What never to do in baseball

Posted by Michael Seff on Saturday, July 2, 2011,
It is a generally accepted principle that baseball players tend to do some foolish things. Take San Francisco Giants' closer Brian Wilson, who took out the frustrations of a second straight blown save on the team's water coolers and dugout walls and came out lucky to avoid any injury.

But the Cincinnati Reds' Brandon Phillips did something on May 25 that allowed the Philadelphia Phillies - and more specifically utility infielder Wilson Valdez - to re-write the record books. You may remember th...

Pirates, Indians head list of first-half surprises

Posted by Michael Seff on Thursday, June 30, 2011,

Though much of the first half of the 2011 Major League Baseball campaign has been predictable (see Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies), as usual there have been a few enjoyable stories that have kept fans' interest until the inevitable sets in come October.

Raise your hand if knew that Kevin Correia was tied for the National League lead in wins? Maybe Kevin's parents didn't even know, but his Pirates teammates sure do, as Pittsburgh shockingly finds itself over .500 in June for the first time since...

Tigers thriving despite roster of ex-stars

Posted by Michael Seff on Saturday, June 11, 2011,

Passion runs deep in the roots of Detroit fans, and the Tigers are a blue-collar, hard-working team reflective of their city. So it goes without saying that there is excitement surrounding the baseball team in the Motor City this year, as they have surged to just one game back of the Cleveland Indians after trailing by as many as eight at the beginning of May.

But it has to be a little bit disheartening to Tigers supporters that a bevvy of former players are making splashes with other squad...

A first-hand account of Gerrit Cole, albeit a brief one

Posted by Michael Seff on Sunday, June 5, 2011,
If you really wanted to watch Gerrit Cole, the potential No. 1 overall pick in this year's 2011 MLB Draft, you might do something as drastic as hike two miles through the backwoods to get to Jackie Robinson Stadium. You might, but I did.

Cole was called upon to start the opening round game of the NCAA Regionals against Fresno State in front of a packed house. The game created so much buzz that even Luke Wilson dropped by to check out Cole pitch (he kept a low profiles sitting in the cheap seat...

Rays' 2011 resurgence shows Draft smarts prevail

Posted by Michael Seff on Wednesday, June 1, 2011,

The Tampa Bay Rays are proving that, in spite of the notion that they are “baseball's farm team”, their recent run of success in the rugged AL East is no fluke.

GM Andrew Friedman has been criticized (even by yours truly) for failing to pull off a big midseason trade during the team's 2008 and 2010 division-championship seasons. Instead, he and manager Joe Maddon felt confident in the young core they had in place. The result? 97 and 96 win seasons.

But it appeared this offseason would b...

Breaking down the wacky and wild first round

Posted by Michael Seff on Friday, April 29, 2011,

Thursday's first round of the NFL Draft was full of surprises, from about 10 minutes until nearly midnight before the Green Bay Packers wrapped things up. Once Von Miller went to Denver with the second overall pick, the major shake-up was on, all the way down to a bizarre “passing” of the pick by the Baltimore Ravens at 26. While giving grades a day after the draft is silly (general rule of thumb is to wait three years), we will examine each pick of the first round in detail.

Undrafted and late-round RBs continuing to flourish

Posted by Michael Seff on Thursday, April 7, 2011,

Arian Foster became a household name last season in winning the rushing title despite being undrafted, but he isn't alone.

What Priest Holmes once did and what Foster accomplished in 2010 prove that it isn't how you start, it's how you finish. Running backs no longer are all the rage in the NFL Draft in part because of guys like Foster, Danny Woodhead, and LeGarrette Blount.

In the postseason, a sixth-round unknown named James Starks became the Packers' go-to tailback in the team's run to a...

Breaking down the Final Four -- well, you really can't

Posted by Michael Seff on Tuesday, March 29, 2011,

Raise your hand if you had Connecticut, Kentucky, Butler, and VCU in the Final Four.

Okay you two, put your hands down.

According to ESPN.com, a grand total of two out of 5.9 million brackets had this quartet convening in Houston to fight for the 2011 NCAA championship.

If you thought a 2, 3, 4, and 11 reaching the Final Four in 2006 was odd, a 3, 4, 8, and 11 is downright remarkable. VCU, an 11-seed, is this year's George Mason, but they can already claim a tougher road in that it has tak...

Musings from the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine

Posted by Michael Seff on Wednesday, March 2, 2011,

The Combine is officially in the books, but there were plenty of storylines to go around during the 2011 event.

Cam Newton was less than impressive, likely eliminating what was already a small chance that he would be the number one pick by the Carolina Panthers. Newton did not seem to win any friends over with his pre-draft interviews, and it would not be surprising if he slipped into the double-digits.

Jake Locker held up considerably well, and he did nothing to hurt his chances of l...

Some incredible Super Bowl tidbits

Posted by Michael Seff on Tuesday, February 8, 2011,
The Green Bay Packers, almost a playoff afterthought in Week 15, are world champions for the 13th time and 4th in the Super Bowl era. Their 31-25 victory in Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers capped a remarkable late-season run to glory, one that began with them sitting at 8-6 and needing to win out and get help just to get into the tournament. But despite not even winning their own division, they are firmly entrenched in history as world champions. As we go inside some of the number...

It's the most wonderful time of the year... for the Panthers?

Posted by Michael Seff on Monday, December 27, 2010,
There is a silver lining after all for the soon-to-be-2-14-Panthers. The John Fox era will officially end after next Sunday's game in Atlanta, and the Panthers will be given the gift of the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. The last time the Panthers ended the season with the league's worst record, they couldn't even get the first pick in the draft because that went to the expansion Houston Texans. Thankfully the Texans botched that pick with David Carr and the Panthers "settled" for ...

Now Pike gets thrown into the fire for Panthers

Posted by Michael Seff on Wednesday, November 17, 2010,
Sometimes it really is too soon to feed a young quarterback to the wolves.

But third-string quarterback and rookie Tony Pike gets to take the reins of a feeble offense against a seething Ravens team on Sunday. Jimmy Claussen is concussed, so his hazing takes a brief hiatus.

The problem for Pike is, this is likely a brief stint under center, so tossing him into the fire is a dangerous proposition. Rookies don't all need to be groomed the same way, and some are more fortunate than others when it ...

Freeman, the younger son, also rises

Posted by Michael Seff on Sunday, November 7, 2010,
Josh Freeman was basically an afterthought when all the attention in the 2009 NFL Draft was heaped on Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez.

Don't even mention that Freeman may have the best hairstyle of the three men, but you can't neglect the fact that the Buccaneers' second-year signal-caller is showing the moxie of a winning veteran in 2010.

5-2 Tampa Bay is attempting to do what every single team that has finished last in the NFC South has done -- reach the playoffs the following year.

T-Buck talks football and recalls his draft experience

Posted by Michael Seff on Friday, October 29, 2010,

DraftAmerica recently spoke with former NFL standout Terrell Buckley, a 14-year veteran who made stops in Green Bay, Miami, Denver, New England, and New York. Buckley was often a fan favorite and now is the assistant strength coach at his alma mater of Florida State. His daughter is an up-and-coming high school golfer in the South Florida area, as recently featured in the Miami Herald. Buckley discussed several aspects of football with DA, including his draft day experience back in 1992 and ...

Breaking down Week 7 in the NFL

Posted by Michael Seff on Sunday, October 24, 2010,

Week 7 is already upon us, and this so-called year of parity is really only a half-truth. The NFC is wide open with no one-loss teams after just six weeks, but it’s the usual suspects in the AFC. This week features a few key divisional games, perhaps none bigger than Monday night in Dallas between the surging Giants and the fading Cowboys. Will Wade Phillips, remarkably still employed at this point, still have a job if Big D loses that one? At any rate, let’s dive right into the picks:

Bills: De-building through the draft?

Posted by Michael Seff on Saturday, October 23, 2010,
If you've ever spent any time in or around the western New York area, you can almost feel the dejection in the air regarding the Buffalo Bills. It's been 10 years and counting since the team last smelled the playoffs.

New GM Buddy Nix is in charge of fixing a mess that resembles that of curing America's tumbling economy. The Bills have virtually no core players to rebuild their organization around, save for C.J. Spiller, whom Nix may have reached for at No. 9 this past April.

But as a team choo...

Restoring the good name of Mike Williams

Posted by Michael Seff on Saturday, October 16, 2010,
When it comes to the NFL draft, the name Mike Williams and bust have become synonymous.

The one-time USC standout who challenged the NFL and lost in trying to enter the league before completing three years of college failed miserably in Detroit, then gained a ton of weight and fell out of playing shape to render any chance of success virtually impossible.

But the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have changed the perception of the name.

Their Mike Williams, selected 101st overall (4th round) out of Syrac...

If only the Giants could hit...

Posted by Michael Seff on Tuesday, October 12, 2010,
The San Francisco Giants offense seemingly will keep them from the World Series, and that is nothing short of a crying shame with the starting pitchers they have.

Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Jonathan Sanchez can go toe-to-toe with any pitching trio in baseball, including Philadelphia's. But it's the prospects of the Giants having to scrap together runs for those three pitchers that should have people worried.

In draft terms, the Giants are nothing short of geniuses when it comes to their start...

Holy parity, the Chiefs are the last of the unbeatens

Posted by Michael Seff on Thursday, October 7, 2010,
Isn't it almost unfathomable that after four weeks of the NFL season, there is only one unbeaten left? Isn't it even more shocking that it's the Kansas City Chiefs?

While doing a feature story for the Herald, I happened to speak to Larry Seiple, the punter on the 1972 Miami Dolphins. They, of course, are still the only team to go through an entire regular and postseason unscathed.

Seiple shared his thoughts on how the Colts misplayed things last year by choosing health over possible perfection,...

Bradford growing up in a hurry

Posted by Michael Seff on Wednesday, September 29, 2010,
They say to never read too much into the preseason, but Sam Bradford drew my attention in just that capacity. A big performance against the New England Patriots in the third preseason game (the one that most simulates the regular season in that the starters play the majority of the game), he made the Rams offense look like it might have some pop in it. That is a far cry from Marc Bulger, Kyle Boller, and Keith Null going 1-15 for a punchless team in 2009.

On Sunday against the Redskins, Bradfo...

Sox knocked off

Posted by Michael Seff on Wednesday, September 22, 2010,

What happened to the White Sox? They started 24-33 and it looked like Ozzie Guillen was toast. The team simply was underperforming. But then came the winning streaks. First, a 11-gamer in late June. Then a 9-gamer in early July. Finally, the real White Sox had stood up and been counted for. But then came the All-Star break.

Their first game out of the break was the 9th game of that...

Undrafted in baseball: Yes, it does happen

Posted by Michael Seff on Monday, September 20, 2010,
When Daniel Nava smacked the first pitch of his major-league career into the Red Sox bullpen for a grand slam on June 12, it must have sent shivers through the likes of George Sherrill, Rod Barajas, and Heath Bell. For it was yet another in an increasing line of undrafted success stories in Major League Baseball.

Just ask the San Diego Padres. Their successful 2010 campaign has been spearheaded by "The Pen-itentiary", with fellow undrafted pitcher Mike Adams paving the way for Bell in the back...
