Safety first

The Rams did something historic in an otherwise-ugly third quarter in Arizona. With their only two scores being safeties, they became the first team to ever score exactly four points in a single quarter. They also became the first team since the 1999 Jaguars to record safeties on consecutive defensive plays. Perhaps not surprisingly, the two quarterbacks in these instances are Kordell Stewart and John Skelton.

            This one hasn’t played out exactly how the pundits thought it would. Yankees-Phillies was a slam dunk. Maybe the Tigers pull through in the AL. But certainly, no one was taking down the mighty Phillies and their superstar rotation, right?

            Wrong.

The Green Bay Packers, almost a playoff afterthought in Week 15, are world champions for the 13th time and 4th in the Super Bowl era. Their 31-25 victory in Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers capped a remarkable late-season run to glory, one that began with them sitting at 8-6 and needing to win out and get help just to get into the tournament.
