Restoring the good name of Mike Williams

When it comes to the NFL draft, the name Mike Williams and bust have become synonymous.

The one-time USC standout who challenged the NFL and lost in trying to enter the league before completing three years of college failed miserably in Detroit, then gained a ton of weight and fell out of playing shape to render any chance of success virtually impossible.

But the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have changed the perception of the name.

Sox knocked off

What happened to the White Sox? They started 24-33 and it looked like Ozzie Guillen was toast. The team simply was underperforming. But then came the winning streaks. First, a 11-gamer in late June. Then a 9-gamer in early July. Finally, the real White Sox had stood up and been counted for. But then came the All-Star break.

Undrafted in baseball: Yes, it does happen

When Daniel Nava smacked the first pitch of his major-league career into the Red Sox bullpen for a grand slam on June 12, it must have sent shivers through the likes of George Sherrill, Rod Barajas, and Heath Bell. For it was yet another in an increasing line of undrafted success stories in Major League Baseball.

Just ask the San Diego Padres. Their successful 2010 campaign has been spearheaded by "The Pen-itentiary", with fellow undrafted pitcher Mike Adams paving the way for Bell in the back...
